Beta Iota Chapter, University of Illinois at Chicago
In 2010, ODPhi was beginning to establish a little more within the Chicago Greek scene. Right around the same time, Ricardo Medina, from Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood, began his search for a perfect fit in a fraternal organization. “UIC has a lot of Greek organizations to join, therefore I had a lot of options to choose from… "I was interested in different organizations, but the majority never truly caught my attention,” says Medina. Those fraternities that did show interest in Ricardo cut off all ties when he said he was not ready to pledge that semester. That left a bad taste in his mouth towards a few organizations that said they were about brotherhood, but yet were not understanding or interested in keeping in touch with Medina after expressing that he was not ready to pledge. But Ricardo was very good friends with fellow student, Angel Sida. Angel’s older brother, Abel, was an ODPhi brother from Loyola. Both Ricardo and Angel had been aware of Omega Delta Phi because of Angel, and because of Alpha Sigma chapter alumni, in Tony Diaz. Towards the end Medina’s freshmen year and seeing how some organizations treated him, he did some more research on ODPhi and made up his mind soon after to bring it to the UIC campus. He contacted Tony Diaz to see what he would need to do to make it a possibility. Along with Angel, they recruited five other young men in the summer of 2010. To complete their group, Luis Corona, Gilberto Moran, David Medina (Ricardo’s cousin), Raul Vargas, and Christopher Caro completed their interest group. They all wanted to bring a new face to Greek life on campus and wanted to build a true brotherhood for young men at the UIC campus. This young group of men hit the group running to meet the requirements to move forward with the founder's program. In the fall of 2010, they were approved as an official interest group of Omega Delta Phi. They worked hard to meet requirements and move on to the next step. It definitely paid off. On April 14th, 2011, the UIC Colony of Omega Delta Phi was officially founded. UIC Colony brothers have a strong work ethic. Their programming skills are amazing and they improve every time to make their events a better success. The guys collaborate well with others, have formed great relationships, and know how to have a good time. To date, they have 25 brothers crossed. We are excited to see what UIC will bring to the table next! UIC has since, throughout their continue hard work and dedication, become the Beta Iota Chapter of Omega Delta Phi.
